In Texas (where I was born and raised) we have a phrase, “fixin’ to”. In Texan, “fixin’ to” means getting prepared. As in, “I’m fixin’ to head out to the Piggly Wiggly” or “I’m fixin’ to have me a nervous breakdown”.
In yoga (where I live now) we also have a phrase, “opportunity for practice.” In yoga, when something goes awry – like falling out of Headstand or realizing that your oh-so-peaceful meditation practice can be shattered by the most insignificant distraction (buzzing fly, anyone?) – we call this “opportunity for practice.” In other words, when our world runs off the rails, rather than fuming, fussing, cussing, spitting or liquefying into a soup of self-pity, we see these events as peepholes into our human behavior. Can I sustain mindfulness while the guy behind me in line is whistling “Love Me Do” at a mind-numbing volume? Can I remind myself of my commitment to compassion as I frantically search for the closest blunt object to shove into the Whistler’s torture chamber of pursed lips? Yep. The opportunities are endless.
So, with that being said, I’m fixin’ to start a blog about the infinite opportunities for practice that stroll across my universe every day. And I hope you’re fixin’ to join me…..
